Historic turn-of-the-century detailing had been sadly covered or removed in Building 69 which serves as an entry to the clinical spaces. Patient hallways which surround Building 77 and connect several buildings were harshly lit with glaring fluorescents. Patient waiting and clinical spaces in Building 77 were devoid of natural light, way-finding was a problem, and patient privacy was practically unachievable with the existing layout.
A seemingly simple solution for Building 69 called for a renovation of the existing plaster walls. Creative solutions were sought to hide a maze of ductwork and an accessible floating ceiling was utilized where utility access had to remain. The existing terrazzo floor was totally uncovered, re-polished and served as the genesis of the color palette for the adjoining spaces in Building 77.
In concert with the historic renovation of Building 69, the architecture of Building 77 embodies a dynamic spirit of creative elegance. Natural light now floods the chemotherapy room and waiting area. The bright and somewhat playful colors enliven the visit while the composition reinforces visual and pedestrian flow toward the central reception/information desk.
The spaces were purposefully reassembled to indicate order and vitality, appropriate to respect the veterans who seek medical services here.
