Construction Cost: $600,000
Completion Date: 2007.01
During The Heritage Center: Image Study it was determined that K-1007 was in need of a new accessible elevator and a newly improved entry space, this prompted the renovation and addition drawings to be completed.
To solve the elevator deficiency a new glass-enclosed stair was inserted into the entry form, this freed the existing stair space to be reconfigured to house the new accessible elevator. At night the new stair tower with horizontal louvers will have a lantern-like glow; during the day it will allow light to transform the once dark and uninviting lobby space into one that is light-filled and gracious. Connecting to the stair tower on the second floor, a new glass-enclosed bridge pierces through a windowless wall to allow light to open up the once-dark corridor.
Designed to ‘float’ within the stair tower, a continuous ribbon-like steel plate forms the tread and riser supports and cantilevers off both sides of a single steel stringer. Pre-cast concrete treads then sit upon neoprene padding.
Funding for the project’s construction is pending.
